37 ships! Record high for Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding

news-details

2022 is a year in which Hudong-Zhonghua, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, has achieved a major breakthrough in the operation of large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. The number of orders received throughout the year has reached 37, creating the highest record of annual orders received by Chinese shipyards for LNG carriers. , the market share jumped from less than 7% in 2021 to nearly 21.8%, ranking second in the world, and the production task has been scheduled to 2028.

In the face of huge orders, Hudong Zhonghua took precautions and planned carefully. At the 2023 business strategy conference held at the beginning of the year, the annual goal of "implementing the strategy of doubling LNG production capacity and optimizing the structural layout of the entire industrial chain" was put forward, and we are confident in meeting the challenges of on-time delivery of large-scale LNG carrier projects.

On the one hand, Hudong Zhonghua Changxing Shipbuilding Base has made every effort to strengthen production planning and project management. At the beginning of this year, it has achieved three major production nodes, including the start of construction of a large LNG carrier, the docking of a ship, and the sea trial of a ship. The goal of starting construction of 9 ships and delivering 4 large-scale LNG carriers in 2018 was the "first shot"; on the other hand, multiple measures were taken to comprehensively improve the capacity building of the LNG industry, and related important infrastructure projects also began to advance rapidly and orderly.

From the end of last year to the beginning of this year, the second phase of the Changxing Shipbuilding Base, which undertakes the strategic task of doubling Hudong-Zhonghua LNG production capacity, has been intensively advancing various construction works. It is understood that the flood control wall of the harbor basin project of the project has been successfully completed, the three-stage flood control system of the harbor basin has been formed, and the construction of the harbor basin project has entered the mid-term acceleration stage. In addition, the second phase of the Changxing Shipbuilding Base, which can be used to build LNG carriers, has also taken shape in docks, workshops and supporting facilities, and it is planned to be completed and put into operation in 2023 to 2024. At that time, the production capacity of Hudong-Zhonghua LNG carriers will be greatly released, increasing from the current 5-6 ships built a year to 10-12 ships.

At the same time, Hudong Zhonghua is also fully mobilizing relevant shipbuilding resources. On January 16 this year, the company's LNG carrier industry capacity improvement project - China Resources Dadong LNG carrier segment construction base successfully passed the strict qualification review of the Qatar LNG series ship segment project team and the ship owner. Shanghai China Resources Dadong Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. is a joint stock company of Hudong Zhonghua and a backbone ship repair yard under China State Shipbuilding Corporation, ranking among the top ten ship repair companies in the world. In recent years, China Resources Dadong has achieved good results in the field of LNG carrier repair and modification and segmented construction, and has gradually developed into an important part of the life cycle maintenance of LNG carriers in the entire Hudong-Zhonghua LNG industry chain. The company passed the qualification review this time, which will provide strong support for the batch construction of Hudong-Zhonghua large-scale LNG carriers.

More importantly, Hudong-Zhonghua is also accelerating the improvement of core capabilities in terms of core supporting facilities for LNG carriers. On January 8 this year, Hudong-Zhonghua’s important project to enhance the capacity of the LNG carrier industry - the new Invar manufacturing workshop officially broke ground. The workshop is scheduled to complete commissioning and acceptance in July this year. After completion, it will become the only Inwa special process workshop in China that can support NO.96 LNG carriers. After the workshop is put into operation, Hudong Zhonghua will form the advantages of centralized production of special supporting industries such as LNG ship insulation boxes, invar prefabricated parts, cryogenic pipes and modules, and further consolidate the foundation for doubling the production capacity of LNG carriers.

After 25 years of hard work, Hudong-Zhonghua has completed and delivered more than 40 LNG storage and transportation ships. The company has gradually developed into a leader in the R&D, design and construction of LNG carriers in China while continuously making breakthroughs in the core and key technologies of LNG equipment. Hudong-Zhonghua is not only the only shipping company in the world that can simultaneously build NO96 type and MARK III type LNG carriers with two containment systems, but also realizes the transformation from oceangoing (174,000 cubic meters large LNG carrier) to offshore (the world's largest shallow water channel 8 10,000 cubic meter LNG ship), covering all high-end LNG products from the inland river (the first 14,000 cubic meter LNG bunkering ship on the Yangtze River) to the inland (China's first 29,000 cubic meter LNG shore tank). With the continuous improvement of the entire industrial chain pedigree, the continuous expansion of product lines, and the continuous enhancement of production capacity and core supporting capabilities, Hudong-Zhonghua will further adhere to the development strategy centered on the R&D, design and manufacture of LNG storage and transportation equipment, in order to ensure China's LNG Energy security, to make greater contributions to the high-quality development of China's shipbuilding industry.
